How This Training Will Hone Your Skills

Offering assists and adjustments to yoga students is an art that requires highly developed observation skills, awareness of body mechanics and movement, intimate familiarity of the poses, and strong communications skills. The balance is to assist and adjust in such a way that students find their ultimate shapes without becoming teacher-dependent. In this carefully designed immersion into the art of assisting and adjusting you will deepen your teaching skills and bring to your students an openness and mind/body connection that advances their practice. What's more, you will get to know your teachers and the other students and receive one-on-one attention and interaction. Teachers successfully completing this coursework will have earned 20 contact hours and 4 non-contact hours. A certificate will be issued so that participating teachers can submit their hours to Yoga Alliance. Hours from this course also may be submitted to NETA for training credit. This training will differentiate you as a teacher.

The foundation of the training rests on proper alignment. From there we develop (1) understanding that more is less when it comes to safe hands-on adjustments, (2) how to use the various forms of assisting and adjusting -- from verbal cues to directional signals to physical manipulation, (3) the role of props as tools in adjusting and assisting; (4) how to empower students to find personal levels of self-adjusting and -assisting safely without developing dependency.

We will cover the following asanas in this training:

  • Coming home: Centering, Child's Pose, Downward Dog, Standing Forward Fold
  • Sun Salutation A & B
  • Chaturanga
  • Upward Dog
  • Standing Poses (Remaining Forward Folds, Warrior Series, Crescent Lunge, Balance
  • Backbends
  • Twists
  • Seated Forward Folds
  • Core Connection
  • Inversions (Headstand, Handstand, Shoulder stand)
  • Surrender to Gravity

A Unique Approach to Assisting and Adjusting Training

Hands-on Practice: Our 24-hour assisting and adjusting teacher training and advanced yoga studies is offered in an intensive weekend of total immersion. As with its other training, the cornerstone of the Green Lotus approach is to study assisting and adjusting not only by reading and through engaging lecture and discussion, but also by practicing the adjustments over and over again in mini-practices in small groups and to the group as a whole.

Professionals to Teach Boundaries: Our training includes a seminar with experienced professionals in life coaching and psychotherapy so that we as teachers can better understand our roles and impact as teachers and also to develop awareness of the different emotions that can be observed in the classroom -- such as anxiety -- and how assisting and adjusting can affect those emotions and feelings.

Real Students as Models: Best of all, our students will be given the opportunity to practice assisting and adjusting not only with each other, but also with Green Lotus yoga students who have applied to be models and who will be present at certain times during the weekend. This will give registered teacher-trainers first-hand experience in learning assists and adjustments with actual yoga students representing a wide range of skills and needs.

Our Faculty

  • Marcia Appel, E-RYT: Marcia, co-founder of Green Lotus and a teacher, has studied and practiced assisting and adjusting from the beginning of her yoga teaching career. She took her first 200-hour training from TeriLeigh Schmidt and has studied with Baron Baptiste (Power Vinyasa), Judith Lasater (Restorative), Janice Gates, Tias Little, and Anne Cushman, among others. She has studied meditation and spirituality with a variety of teachers and currently is participating in an 18-month training program at Spirit Rock in Northern California to explore the connection between meditation and yoga. Marcia teaches vinyasa, yin, hatha, gentle, and restorative classes, which has given her the unique opportunity to watch students' bodies from many different perspectives.
  • Kristin Weitzel, RYT: Kristin, who lives and works in New York City, has been practicing and studying yoga for more than six years.  Growing up a dancer gave her practical insight into  the movement of human form.  In 2010, she was fortunate enough to become a Certified Anusara Inspired® Yoga Instructor which began a journey she hopes to share, one that continues to transform both her personal practice and life as a whole.  Kristin's active 'hands-on' approach to assisting, adjusting, and teaching helps students find deeper connections within their bodies and minds. Kristin has completed workshops with Elena Brower, Noah Maze, RossBrayburn, Marcia Appel, and Baron Baptiste.  She studied philosophy, anatomy, meditation, and yoga extensively with Anthony and Rebecca Benenati of City Yoga in Los Angeles, Zhenja La Rosa of Virayoga, and Leslie Kaminoff of The Breathing Project in New York City. Kristin says she is honored to participate in such an inspirational community and contribute to the teaching of the Green Lotus Yoga Assisting and Adjusting Training.
  • Jeanine Thompson, LICSW, RYT: Jeanine is a psychotherapist, human relations executive and consultant, and praticing yogini who also teaches in Green Lotus's 230-hour teacher trainng program. For this training,sShe will lead a session on working with students who exhibit anxiety or nervousness on the mat, who may be inhibited by assists or adjustments,  how to spot the signals, and how to honor boundaries with compassion. She also will explore ways in which teachers can take good care of themselves mentally and emotionally as they work with students. Jeanine's experience in her private psychotherapy practice combined with years of leadership in the some of the country's  most forward-thinking corporations combined with her yoga training provides original insight.
