What is Thai Yoga Massage?

Thai Yoga Massage is unique from other types of bodywork and massage in that it combines supported Yoga asanas (poses), rhythmic acupressure techniques, gentle stretching, muscle compression, joint mobilization, pranayama (breath work), healing energy and meditation.

The first roots of this ancient healing system date back over 2,500 years to India. Thai Massage eventually made its way to Thailand, where Ayurvedic (India’s medicine system) techniques and principles became influenced by traditional Chinese medicine.

For centuries, Thai Massage (also known as Thai Bodywork, Lazy Man’s Yoga and Nurad Boran) was performed by monks as one component of Thai medicine. There has always been a folk element surrounding this practice. Family members give each other the techniques in their remote villages – especially women as they were not allowed to enter the temples where monks performed the practice.

People describe Thai Yoga Massage as both extremely relaxing and energizing.

What can I expect in my Thai Yoga Massage session?

A typical Thai Yoga Massage session lasts between one to two full hours. You will lie on a large futon on the floor. The practitioner will use her hands, knees, elbows, palms, forearms and feet to move you through the flowing series of yoga-like poses and rhythmic stretching and acupressure techniques.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing as the massage is given fully clothed (attire may be provided for the session if you forget a change of clothes). Layers are recommended as your body may cool down during the session. Your feet will be bare.

Then just lay back, relax and enjoy!

Additional Tips:

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before the session as this may cause discomfort in some of the poses and inhibit the energetic flow
  • If it's your first time, please arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms. Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you have a few moments to rest and relax before beginning
  • Be sure that your practitioner has your complete health history, because people with certain conditions should not have Thai Yoga Bodywork (please see “Precautions”)
  • If you feel discomfort at any time, let your practitioner know immediately so modifications can be made
