Ayurvedic Tip: Oil Pulling
/ Guest UserOil pulling, also known as "kavala" or "gundusha" in Sanskrit, is an Ayurveda dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut oil or sesame oil) in your mouth on an empty stomach for up to 20 minutes.
According to Ayurveda health-care philosophy, oil pulling draws out toxins in your body to improve oral health specifically and to improve your overall health. Swishing an oil like coconut oil in your mouth for multiple minutes takes practice, especially if you have the dreaded "gag reflex". After a few weeks, though, it becomes as customary as brushing your teeth and leaves your mouth and breath cleaner and fresher. You can find oil pulling oils in many natural health food stores. We like Daily Swish from Banyan Botanicals.

In Ayurveda, we use the subtle qualities of foods to bring balance to our bodies and to our minds and energies. If we eat in balance with the seasons and our personal constitutions, or doshas, our bodies will have the ability to digest and assimilate the foods we eat, and we will receive all of the necessary vitamins and minerals from food. Our systems will be able to efficiently eliminate the waste products. When our systems are balanced, we will not crave unhealthy foods or have the urge to overeat.
In Western thinking, we recognize that each human being has a body, a mind, and a spirit. In yoga philosophy, the belief is that each human being consists of five (Sanskrit: pancha), rather than three, layers (Sanskrit: koshas)….
Seasonal Ayurvedic practices focus on balancing by pacifying the dominant dosha and encouraging the others. The summer season is associated with pitta dosha. Pitta dosha, containing elements of fire and water, is known as the transformation dosha.
As summer turns to fall in our midwestern clime, we observe the earth and plant life beginning to dry. We may feel this same sense of dryness or brittleness in our physical bodies or our emotional states. The near-constant motion of the autumn breezes and the sense of change permeating the air may manifest in our energies as feelings of anxiety or restlessness.

Earth – Air – Fire – Water – Space

Much as we take in food, water, and oxygen, we also take in sights, sounds, and other sensory information as well as subtle energies and impressions from our environment. Our senses “feed” our minds and spirits, much like food feeds our bodies. If we are to truly cleanse, we must bring attention to what we feed our minds and spirits.
