Marcia Appel

Marcia Appel

Yoga & Meditation Teacher, Teacher Training Faculty & Green Lotus Partner

Marcia stepped onto her mat in 2000 to ease grief caused when her beloved father developed a serious illness and also to combat the effects of fibromyalgia. Her practice deepened, her mind calmed, her body strengthened, and her spirit renewed. The fibromyalgia ended, and she felt as vital as she had in years. "Yoga and meditation changed everything for me and for my family," she says.

In 2006, Marcia, a former journalist and corporate executive, wrote the plan that launched Green Lotus. In 2007, Green Lotus opened, and Marcia and business partner Merry Beth Hovey, who joined in 2009, planted the seeds of service that are the foundation of the Green Lotus philosophy. "As teachers and healers," Marcia says, "we meet students and clients where they are. We learn and grow from each other -- and have fun doing it."

Marcia has studied with talented and compassionate teachers, including Baron Baptiste for power vinyasa and Judith Lasater to become a registered Relax & Renew instructor. She created Green Lotus’ Restorative Teacher Training, based on the teachings of Judith and other restorative pioneers.

In May 2012 Marcia completed the RYT 300-hour program – Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training - at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. It explored the integration of mindfulness meditation and yoga with teachers Phillip Moffitt, Mark Coleman, Anna Douglas, Janice Gates, Anne Cushman, Richard Miller, and Chip Hartranft. She now is credentialed to teach Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation, including Yoga Nidra, and teaches classes and workshops in these subjects at the centers. She also teaches yin, hatha, and vinyasa. She completed Level 1 of iRest training in 2018; based on the ancient practice of Yoga Nidra and made accessible for the modern world, it combats PTSD, sleeplessness, fatigue, anxiety and depression, and much more. She trains teachers annually in Mindfulness Yoga and Mediation and also in Yoga Nidra in two 20-hour weekend programs. She helped to develop Green Lotus' 240-hour teacher training programs and is a co-leader of them.

Marcia enjoys traveling, writing and reading, hiking, swimming, gardening, and studying yoga. She and her husband adore their daughter, son, and daughter-in-law (not to mention their dog and cat).

Mariah Bowen

Mariah Bowen

Massage, CranioSacral, Shiatsu, Thai Yoga & Cupping Therapy

mariah smiling ver square.jpg

Mariah is dedicated to affecting positive change in each client — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — through bodywork that is intuitive, anatomically informed, energetic, and customized to best address any pattern of disharmony. She takes a proactive, holistic, and integrative approach to healthcare, individualizing bodywork treatments through energetic healing: Swedish, therapeutic, rehabilitative, trigger-point massage, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu, Thai yoga bodywork, ampuku, and traditional Chinese medicine modalities including auricular therapy and cupping.

Mariah developed her passion for the maintenance of the human form and spirit from a place of reverence and wonder. Growing up in the tiny Athabaskan village of Tanana, Alaska, she learned to harvest, subsist, and observe. She cultivated gratitude for every last pebble and snowflake and was humbled by the power of the river, the wind, the northern lights. Nature taught her the tao before she ever heard it described. She remains a lifelong student of nature, cycles, growth, and decay. A winding road has led her from her home on the Yukon river to graduate from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, to spend five years raising two beautiful daughters in Washington, D.C., to relocate to the Twin Cities, and to discover bodywork as her mode of serving and promoting health. She completed the East/West program at CenterPoint Massage and Shiatsu school. Bringing a third daughter into the world in the summer 2015 has been her most recent joy.

Mariah offers clients the opportunity to stop and breathe, to reconnect with themselves, and to affirm that in order to live full, satisfying lives, their bodies need to be utilized, respected, cared for, and celebrated. She finds it rewarding to work with people of all sorts, particularly those most needing healing. It is her calling and a great honor to help people navigate the delicate space between their structural bodies and their ethereal well-being.

Pablo Charis

Pablo Charis

Yoga & Meditation Teacher & Thai Yoga Massage Therapist

thai-yoga-massage-twin-cities-yoga

Pablo was introduced to yoga in 1992 while working as a touring musician. Traveling city-to-city and country-to-country for almost five years, while glamorous and exciting, had begun to take a toll. Seeking a means for better sleep and a clear mind, Pablo found ashtanga yoga, a practice handed down from Krishnamacharya, the godfather of all modern yoga, to his pupil Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Pablo immersed himself into his practice, studying postures, alignment, breathwork, anatomy, and philosophy.

Pablo has studied ashtanga with David Swenson, Kino MacGregor, Tim Feldman, and Patrick Nolan, and hatha yoga with Rod Stryker and Bikram Choudhury. He has taken pranayama classes with Max Strom and Patrick Nolan and anatomy and yin classes with Dr. Paul Grilley. His Thai yoga massage studies with Cheri Clampet Borda and Arturo Peel allowed him to deepen his knowledge, specifically with bodies that have experienced injury or trauma. He has put this training to work for many years as an outreach volunteer with Lutheran Social Services, Project Pride for Living, and The Link where he teaches yoga to homeless youths, people recovering form addiction, and those transitioning in life.

Drawing on his years of direct experience and training Pablo will help guide you to a deeper understanding of your own practice. Pablo's yoga training and experience includes a 200-hour vinyasa certification, 40-hour Primary Series Ashtanga certification, 40-hour Intermediate Series certification, 40-hour Para Yoga Certification, 40-hour training in Therapeutic and Thai yoga massage, and over 24 years of yoga practice.

Pablo is available for private instruction, offering posture alignment and breath work, discussion of yogic practice and philosophy, and Thai yoga massage.

merry-beth-freienmuth-twin-cities-yoga

Merry Beth (Hovey) Freienmuth was introduced to yoga at the YMCA in 2000. She found the physical asana practice was the perfect transition for her aging body that could no longer tolerate a classical ballet practice. After more than fifteen years of practicing and teaching ballet, she began teaching Body Flow, Pilates, and yoga at the YMCA in 2002. The non-asana benefits of yoga gave her the strength and ability to balance a demanding full-time job, raise two children into adulthood, and share her passion for yoga with hundreds of students at the YMCA.

Merry Beth became a partner in Green Lotus in 2009 and in 2013 retired from her corporate position as vice president of marketing for a global franchise company to focus full-time on Green Lotus. She is the director of training for Green Lotus' Registered Yoga School and a core faculty member of the training programs.

Certifications: E-RYT 500; Yoga Fit2, yin, and restorative yoga; mat Pilates, barre, qi gong, tai qi - yang short form, Body Flow, Balletone, Senior Fitness.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine

denise lewis.jpg

Denise Lewis, a native Minnesotan, earned her Masters in Oriental Medicine in 2005 at the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  She is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and is licensed through the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.  Her journey toward becoming a provider of health and healing services began with a career as a Family Medicine physician; as she approached mid-life burnout, her patients were telling her stories of their healing experiences with acupuncture.  She made the decision to study this traditional medicine as she continued her conventional medicine practice.  As she learned the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine, she felt she had come home to the medicine she had always wanted to practice: holistic, honoring the body’s own capacity for healing, natural support of that process, and an appreciation of the unique needs of each individual seeking health and healing.  Although Denise’s medical license is no longer active, she approaches her practice of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine grounded in the base of knowledge from conventional medicine.  She offers acupuncture, cupping, herbal consultation, nutrition counseling, meditation and guided imagery, and auricular acupuncture, and treats a broad range of conditions including pain syndromes, fertility support, menstrual issues, menopause symptoms, digestive disorders, respiratory conditions, sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression.  Denise also completed the Green Lotus 200-hour yoga teacher training program and is enjoying exploring the intersections between Chinese Medicine principles and yogic philosophy and practice. Denise has two adult daughters and enjoys gardening, cross-country skiing, and Gopher football.

Bobby Sullivan

Bobby Sullivan

Intuitive, Past-Life Regression Facilitator & Reiki Practitioner

bobbysullivan.jpg

Nothing about Bobby Sullivan's quick wit and laid-back approach speaks of his unusual gifts. Take a closer look, though, and you'll find that Bobby ventured down a road that has taken him a long way from where he started. After a long career as a senior executive in the Minneapolis advertising industry, Bobby developed his intuitive and healing abilities possessed from an early age.

In 1998, Bobby signed up for a class taught by well-known author Echo Bodine. “Meeting Echo for the first time was like seeing a long-lost friend. We quickly became close, and after a year of being her student, she asked me to work along side her as a teaching assistant," Bobby says.  In early 2005 Bobby partnered with Echo to open up “The Center,” a healing and teaching facility located in South Minneapolis.

Bobby has since left “The Center” and offers classes on numerous meta-physical topics at different venues around the country. As well as developing his practice as a healer, ghost buster, and past-life regression facilitator, Bobby is respected for his aura energy readings. During these sessions he uses his intuitive abilities to interpret the auras of his clients he photographs with his aura-imaging equipment. “It is really fun for people to actually see how what is happening in their lives can show up in their auras," he explains.

“The energy of the world is changing quickly,” Bobby says. “My mission is to be a catalyst for people who are looking to understand, embrace, and find their place in this change. The last undiscovered frontier is going to be the ability to explore what’s inside of each one of us. I hope my work can spread some light for people that are willing to take this journey”.
