Marcia Appel

Marcia Appel

Yoga & Meditation Teacher, Teacher Training Faculty & Green Lotus Partner

Marcia stepped onto her mat in 2000 to ease grief caused when her beloved father developed a serious illness and also to combat the effects of fibromyalgia. Her practice deepened, her mind calmed, her body strengthened, and her spirit renewed. What's more, the fibromyalgia ended, she lost weight, and felt as vital as she had in years. "Yoga and meditation changed everything for me and for my family," she says.

In 2006, Marcia, a former journalist and corporate executive, wrote the plan that would launch Green Lotus. In 2007, Green Lotus opened, and Marcia and business partner Merry Beth Hovey planted the seeds of service that have become the foundation of the Green Lotus philosophy. "As teachers and healers," Marcia says, "we meet students and clients where they are. We learn and grow from each other -- and have fun doing it!"

Marcia has been blessed to study with talented and compassionate teachers, including Baron Baptiste for power vinyasa and Judith Lasater to become a registered Relax and Renew instructor. She leads a Restorative Teacher Training each year, based on the teachings of Judith and other restorative pioneers.

In May 2012 Marcia completed the RYT 300-hour progam – Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training - at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California. It explored the integration of mindfulness meditation and yoga with teachers Phillip Moffitt, Mark Coleman, Anna Douglas, Janice Gates, Anne Cushman, Richard Miller, and Chip Hartranft. She now is credentialed to teach Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation, including Yoga Nidra, and teaches classes and workshops in these subjects at the centers. She also teaches yin, hatha, and vinyasa. She trains teachers annually in Mindfulness Yoga and Mediation in a 20-hour weekend program and is co-leader of Green Lotus' 200-hour and 300-hour teacher training programs.

Marcia enjoys writing and reading, hiking, swimming, gardening, and studying yoga. She loves to travel with her friends and husband and adores her son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and remarkable mom, Henrietta (not to mention her dog, cat, and horse).

Massage, CranioSacral, Shiatsu, Thai Yoga & Cupping Therapy

mariah smiling ver square.jpg

Mariah is dedicated to affecting positive change in each client — physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — through bodywork that is intuitive, anatomically informed, energetic, and customized to best address any pattern of disharmony. She takes a proactive, holistic, and integrative approach to healthcare, individualizing bodywork treatments through energetic healing: Swedish, therapeutic, rehabilitative, trigger-point massage, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu, Thai yoga bodywork, ampuku, and traditional Chinese medicine modalities including auricular therapy and cupping.

Mariah developed her passion for the maintenance of the human form and spirit from a place of reverence and wonder. Growing up in the tiny Athabaskan village of Tanana, Alaska, she learned to harvest, subsist, and observe. She cultivated gratitude for every last pebble and snowflake and was humbled by the power of the river, the wind, the northern lights. Nature taught her the tao before she ever heard it described. She remains a lifelong student of nature, cycles, growth, and decay. A winding road has led her from her home on the Yukon river to graduate from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, to spend five years raising two beautiful daughters in Washington, D.C., to relocate to the Twin Cities, and to discover bodywork as her mode of serving and promoting health. She completed the East/West program at CenterPoint Massage and Shiatsu school. Bringing a third daughter into the world in the summer 2015 has been her most recent joy.

Mariah offers clients the opportunity to stop and breathe, to reconnect with themselves, and to affirm that in order to live full, satisfying lives, their bodies need to be utilized, respected, cared for, and celebrated. She finds it rewarding to work with people of all sorts, particularly those most needing healing. It is her calling and a great honor to help people navigate the delicate space between their structural bodies and their ethereal well-being.

Yoga Teacher & Annandale Licensee

elizabeth cabalka.png

In May 2017, Elizabeth opened the doors to her Green Lotus Yoga & Healing Center in Annandale, Minnesota. An exurban community of the Twin Cities and a popular vacation destination, Annandale sits amid beautiful lakes and rolling prairies of verdant farmland. Its population swells (like the waves of the lakes) to more than 20,000 spring through late fall.

Green Lotus Yoga & Healing Center - Annandale delivers a wide range of integrative healing techniques to its community, including reiki and other energy work; therapeutic massage and Thai yoga massage; infrared sauna; life counseling; workshops about wellness, and classes in yoga and meditation.

Elizabeth's decision to become a Green Lotus licensee follows a vibrant career in high tech. Her lifelong interest in integrative healing and yoga led her to complete Green Lotus's certified 200-hour teacher training in 2015, after teaching for eight years. She also is a noted lecturer, workshop leader, and author of two non-fiction books dealing with self-discovery: her 2003 memoir Wednesdays at the Fluff 'n' Fold and 2016's Yoga Expression Spirit in which she chronicles the three pillars of her life. In 2004, Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network hired Elizabeth to author a collection of interviews with family members and friends of prostate cancer patients. The Circles of Love Collection still is available from the organization.

Elizabeth lives in Annandale with her husband. An avid bicyclist, she often can be found pedaling throughout the Annandale area and around the country.

Annandale brings the number of Green Lotus facilities in Minnesota to four: two which are corporately owned (one each in Mendota Heights and Lakeville) and two licensees (Eden Prairie and Annandale).

Pablo Charis

Pablo Charis

Yoga & Meditation Teacher & Thai Yoga Massage Therapist

Pablo was introduced to yoga in 1992 while working as a touring musician. Traveling city-to-city and country-to-country for almost five years, while glamorous and exciting, had begun to take a toll. Seeking a means for better sleep and a clear mind, Pablo found ashtanga yoga, a practice handed down from Krishnamacharya, the godfather of all modern yoga, to his pupil Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Pablo immersed himself into his practice, studying postures, alignment, breathwork, anatomy, and philosophy.

Pablo has studied ashtanga with David Swenson, Kino MacGregor, Tim Feldman, and Patrick Nolan, and hatha yoga with Rod Stryker and Bikram Choudhury. He has taken pranayama classes with Max Strom and Patrick Nolan and anatomy and yin classes with Dr. Paul Grilley. His Thai yoga massage studies with Cheri Clampet Borda and Arturo Peel allowed him to deepen his knowledge, specifically with bodies that have experienced injury or trauma. He has put this training to work for many years as an outreach volunteer with Lutheran Social Services, Project Pride for Living, and The Link where he teaches yoga to homeless youths, people recovering form addiction, and those transitioning in life.

Drawing on his years of direct experience and training Pablo will help guide you to a deeper understanding of your own practice. Pablo's yoga training and experience includes a 200-hour vinyasa certification, 40-hour Primary Series Ashtanga certification, 40-hour Intermediate Series certification, 40-hour Para Yoga Certification, 40-hour training in Therapeutic and Thai yoga massage, and over 24 years of yoga practice.

Pablo is available for private instruction, offering posture alignment and breath work, discussion of yogic practice and philosophy, and Thai yoga massage.

Merry Beth Freienmuth

Merry Beth Freienmuth

Yoga Teacher, Teacher Training Faculty & Green Lotus Partner

Merry Beth (Hovey) Freienmuth was introduced to yoga at the YMCA in 2000. She found the physical asana practice was the perfect transition for her aging body that could no longer tolerate a classical ballet practice. After more than fifteen years of practicing and teaching ballet, she began teaching body flow, Pilates, and yoga at the YMCA in 2002. The non-asana benefits of yoga gave her the strength and ability to balance a demanding full-time job, raise two children into adulthood, and share her passion for yoga with hundreds of students at the YMCA.

Merry Beth became a partner in Green Lotus in 2009 and in 2013 retired from her corporate position as vice president of marketing for a global franchise company to focus full-time on Green Lotus. She is the director of training for Green Lotus' Registered Yoga School, and a core faculty member of the 200-hour and 300-hour teacher training programs.

Marcia Kirk

Marcia Kirk

Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Marcia is a Licensed Acupuncturist with a master's degree in Oriental Medicine, which means that, when necessary, she integrates acupuncture with custom herbal formulas to complement and strengthen the treatment.  These herbal formulas can be used for common and complex problems and are powerful, effective options for people who are looking for safe natural alternatives to drugs or for those that cannot tolerate the side effects of drugs.

Marcia became interested in Chinese medical theory when, as a designer, she began incorporating elements of feng shui into her home design.  When energy in a space flows well and is conducive to the task of that space it is also a much more enjoyable room in which to be.  As her interest in physical space evolved to include the healing influence of energy in the body her journey into Chinese medicine began.

Marcia says, "I’ve always felt that being heard  is extremely healing for people.  It is very soothing to me personally to just be with people and to listen to them.  Add to that a really effective, tried-and-true system of medicine that treats the whole person and the potential for healing and wellness grows immeasurably. Finally, I love a good puzzle.  That is how I practice.  We work together, bringing together my healing medicine and your concern and vision for your health.”

Marcia's experience covers many areas including women’s health, acute and chronic pain, digestive concerns, and more.  She has undergone specialized training in pain and rehabilitation at the Courage Center and in using acupuncture to enhance outcomes and quality of life during cancer treatment through the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Marcia is happy to do a free 15-minute consultation by phone or in person.  “If you’ve never had acupuncture, it’s probably not what you think.  It is calming, it doesn’t hurt, and people often fall asleep during a session - I encourage that.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call and ask.”

Marcia serves on the board of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Association of Minnesota, and was president in 2012.  She lives in Prior Lake with her husband.  They have five grown children living throughout the world with their spouses and children - two in the Twin Cities area, two in Hawaii, and one in New Zealand,  Whenever possible, Marcia and her husband spend holidays traveling.

Marcia is available for both therapeutic acupuncture sessions and cosmetic acupuncture sessions.

Kris Koestner

Kris Koestner, LICSW

Psychotherapy & Therapeutic Counseling

Kris's 21 years of experience as a therapist took root because she engaged in her own individual therapy process and realized that this thing called therapy really did work!  At the time she was a secondary English teacher and a volunteer advocate for the Women's Resource Center in Watertown, South Dakota, a center she helped to create.  Through her commitment to women's issues and a desire to integrate more of her passions into her work life, she entered the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota, graduating with her MSW in 1990.

Upon graduating she joined Lakewood Counseling and Career Center and started her own successful private practice, with an emphasis on women's issues.  Over the years her practice has expanded to include working with both men and women, including couples's counseling.  Her specialties include trauma and dissocciation, anxiety, depression, spirituality, self-esteem, and attachment issues.  She is trained as a Level II EMDR therapist.  EMDR is a therapeutic tool used to help clients metabolize trauma and resolve past abuse issues in a more effective and efficient way than traditional talk therapy alone.  In addition, EMDR can be used for strengthening the internal resources of clients in such situations as passing medical boards and exams, performance anxiety, job interviews, etc.  One of the reasons EMDR is so helpful is that it works with the whole body experience, not only thoughts and feelings, but also physical sensations and body memories.

Kris works out of a relational model of therapy that focuses on a client's strengths and creates a collaborative approach to helping people achieve greater life satisfaction.  "Being a therapist is privileged work and I feel honored to walk with people on their life journey," Kris says.

From the beginning of her therapy practice she has wanted to somehow integrate talk therapy with body work.  Being at Green Lotus Yoga and Healing Center is an answer to that lifelong dream of continued integraton between body, mind, and spirit.

Kris has lived in Lakeville since 1992.  She and her husband are the parents of two adult children: a daughter and son, both of whom are married and live in the area, and the grandparents of two precious and rambunctious grandsons.

Kris says, "Therapy is all about the relationship.  During the first session, we will together be determining if ours is a good fit.  Your concerns will be heard in a supportive environment.  I will be as honest as possible in providing feedback and recommendations for treatment".

Concerns that may bring you to therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • Relationship issues
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse
  • Family of origin issues
  • Self-esteem
  • Parenting
  • Caring for aging parents
  • Identity or orientation issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Addiction aftercare

Therapeutic Counseling Services Pricing

Therapy Session, 50-55 minutes, $160

Kris Is a Preferred One in-network provider and a HealthPartner's tier 2 provider. Many other insurance companies offer out-of-network benefits which can also help with the cost of therapy.  Check with your insurance carrier or HR person to determine what benefits are available to you.

Payment is due at each session, but Kris is willing to negotiate a payment plan if needed.  She has a few slots open for reduced or sliding scale clients.  Please discuss any concerns about cost or coverage with Kris directly.
